Forensic Archaeology

Forensic archaeology uses archaeological research methods in forensic and crime scene studies. This can be done in co-operation with the national police connected to single crime cases, or by international organizations to study for example mass graves. The best known field of forensic research is by far the studies of war crimes against humanity and human rights violations. For instance the mass grave excavations carried out in the territory of former Jugoslavia are well known in public.

Formerly the forensic excavations were often carried out by untrained personnel, for example police or military. Lot of invaluable information was lost, such as details of site formation processes and find contexts. Nowadays the professionals of forensic archaeology can certify that the same mistakes are not repeated in the future.
