Analogously with Forensic archaeology, Forensic anthropology uses the methodology of archaeological osteology and physical anthropology in crime scene investigations. Forensic anthropology has been utilized for example in singular crime cases, international studied of war crimes and identification of disaster victims.
A well known case for identification of disaster victims happened connected to the tsunami in Southwest Asia in 2004. Forensic anthropologists have also had an important role in the mass grave excavations carried out in the territory of former Jugoslavia. Specialists in the field work for example in the Criminal Police, Finland and the departments of Forensic Medicine at universities.
